When you need a pick me up (how to dance it out)…
Okay, so I am slowly getting out of the “sad songs only please” phase (see my post here for that playlist), and ready to put on some fun, upbeat songs, and dance it out. THANK YOU wonderful ladies for the feedback from my last post and sending some of your favourite feel good songs my way! Listening to the songs that make you happy dance inspired me to remember a few of my own happy songs which I locked far away for a while there.
For all you Grey’s Anatomy fans out there, you know all about how dancing it out makes the tough stuff a little easier to handle right? It looks and sounds great, however I’ve realized one of the main precursors to successfully dancing it out is having someone (Meredith where were you??) put on the music, and force you to dance. When you are feeling like shit, it’s not really the first thing that you feel like doing (insert picture of me purposely putting on songs to make me cry). Meredith intensely puts on a song, starts dancing, and then after resisting for a moment, Christina (or now I suppose Maggie and/or Amelia), slowly get up and wimpy dance, which soon enough turns into a full fledge dance party. WELL,I want to thank you for being my Meredith – my person (er… persons??)! Every time you sent me one of your go-to songs, of course I had to listen to it right away and after the first few, I found myself dancing in my seat, feeling my serotonin levels already rising.
Your favourites mixed with mine, is now what I call Infertility & Loss – When You Need A Pick Me Up and is available on my Spotify playlist below:
One of my FAVOURITE songs to put me into a happy dance is Home by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. I remember first listening to it the day after moving out of my parents house and into the condo, living on my own for the first time. I was so excited at the prospect of this new life adventure with a profound sense of freedom. I made a pot of coffee, put on my makeup, did my hair, and literally danced around the condo in my robe. I remember everything about that day – the zebra print robe I was wearing, the smell of the coffee in my Anthropologie mug, the sun pouring in. It is actually impossible for me not to smile when I put this song on!
There are also a few songs in there that take me right back to driving along the coast of Portugal with Branton last summer, and when I hear them I feel as if I can smell the ocean and feel the sunset. Kings of Summer by ayokay is one of those song for me, and is a double whammy as it only made my Portugal playlist after I was introduced to it during the best yoga of my life with Raw Yoga. But that is a whoooole other story (summary: she was a big part of healing my heart through yoga post losing Lyric ❤️).
Anywho, I hope, when you are ready, that you can grab a friend (or your favourite robe), put on your happy song, and dance it out. And if you’re like how I was feeling, in a little bit of a slump, and can’t even begin to think of what YOUR jam songs are, borrow some of ours and dance along with me. 🙂
(Oh, and please do me a favour and play Another Day of Sun from the La La Land soundtrack, and if you haven’t watched it yet DO IT!! ;).
Let me know which songs you love from the playlist, or songs you think just need to be on there. I’ll keep adding to the playlist as we journey together.
XO,
Kayla
